On the shore

“…vicinity to the sea is desirable, because it is easier to do nothing by the sea than anywhere else, and because bathing and basking on the shore cannot be considered an employment but only an apotheosis of loafing. ” E.F. Benson.

Doing nothing at all is difficult for a perpetual doer although the prospect of bathing and basking on the shore does hold a certain appeal 🙂 Unfortunately being very fair-skinned with freckles means such a notion is completely out of the question. The pain of sunburn and the inability to remain largely anonymous due to a brilliant scarlet glow and thermodynamic output in excess of one yottajoule (sufficient to cause charring of nearby organic materials) is too much to contemplate.

Walking, photography and sailing are the present past-times of choice and all are proving  highly enjoyable. Admittedly it’s a little warm to be hiking around but with plenty of sun lotion, a hat and copious amounts of water, getting out and about on foot is the best way to explore the shoreline and it’s undiscovered treasures.  My knees don’t thank me but who cares – they’re only knees.  I can always crawl if things get desperate and I’m sure it won’t look any stranger than my stilted upright gait!

    • I’m having a really nice time Dad… probably wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea but it suits me just fine 🙂 The only thing I wish would be a better phone signal so we could still catch up. Love you xxx

  2. Beautiful, Tracy! I don’t live close to the sea, but only really feel “home” when I’m beside her. It warms my heart to know that you live near the water. As you know, I think it is so healing/soothing for the soul! I think you deserve to spend as much time as you can soaking in the warmth of the sun and the saltiness of the sea air… Thank you for sharing such lovely photos! xo

    • If I could bring you here I would because I think you’d love it, your boys would too. If anyone deserves love, healing and warmth its you but as I can’t bring you across to the UK I send you all those things always 🙂

  3. WOW I love your pictures. They remind me of my own hometown. Hmmm maybe I will have to see if I can swing a visit out there soon.
As one fair-skinned, freckled (and used to be red, now mine’s reddish-grey, whatever) person to another: Sunscreen Is Your friend! Buy and wear it by the bucketful! But watch the knees they’re not ‘just’ knees, they’re YOUR knees and any damage you do will take a long, long time to heal. That said, all you really have to do about it is slow down.
Oh, one final thing: so you’re not used to doing nothing. Well respond to that by being the VERY BEST at doing nothing 🙂

    • Snap 🙂 I used to be red, now mottled (hairdresser says she can’t really name the colour – I can’t either but at least its growing back!) See if you can get that visit to your hometown, you’re sure to enjoy it and as I’ve come to learn, time doesn’t wait around for us so we have to make the most of it.

    • I think perhaps I was meant to be something other than human because I’m really very happy in nature and don’t need much exposure to civilization to remind me why I prefer the sea or the countryside over the big cities. I remember visiting your part of the world and thinking how beautiful it is, we’re both very lucky.
